What flowers actually survive a summer outdoor wedding?

Anonymous·4/20/2026

August in Texas. Outdoor ceremony. Florist is suggesting hydrangeas because that's what we showed her on Pinterest, but I've heard they wilt fast in heat. What's actually durable?

Hydrangeas are basically the worst summer outdoor flower. They wilt within 2-3 hours in 90F+ heat. The Pinterest photos you're seeing are either shot indoors, shot in the cool part of the day, or staged on the cooler-of-ice trick.

What actually holds up in summer heat:

    • Roses (especially garden roses) — surprisingly resilient if conditioned properly
    • Ranunculus and anemones in cooler season; replace with celosia and zinnias in true summer
    • Dahlias — gorgeous and heat-tolerant
    • Eucalyptus and other foliage — dries beautifully if not refreshed
    • Protea — almost indestructible, very on-trend
    • Sunflowers if your aesthetic allows

What your florist can do regardless of flower choice:

    • Condition flowers in cold storage until 30 minutes before placement
    • Spritz with anti-transpirant spray (Crowning Glory is the standard)
    • Build arrangements in floral foam or oasis with constant water source
    • Position arrangements out of direct afternoon sun

If you're married to the hydrangea look, ask your florist about silk hydrangeas mixed in with real flowers. Trained eye notices, untrained eye doesn't, and they survive 100°F all day.
