What is photo proofing?

Short answer

The client's review pass on a gallery, where they mark favorites or selections before final delivery.

Full definition

Proofing is the stage between the photo session and final delivery where the client reviews the photographer's shortlist, marks favorites, and selects which images they want edited or printed. In digital workflows, proofing happens inside the client gallery — the client favorites or rejects images, and the photographer sees the selections in real time. Proofing replaces physical proof prints that older photographers mailed to clients.
