What is a print release for photography?

Short answer

A document granting a client permission to print images they purchased.

Full definition

A print release is a written grant from the photographer to the client allowing them to make prints of specific images for personal use. Print labs ask for one because copyright stays with the photographer by default — without a release, the lab can refuse to print. Most modern delivery platforms auto-generate a print release when a client purchases or receives full-resolution digital files.
